Fingerprint Image Enhancement Using STFT Analysis

چکیده
Contrary to popular belief, despite decades of research in fingerprints, reliable fingerprint recognition is an open problem. Extracting features out of poor quality prints is the most challening problem faced in this area. This paper introduces a new approach for fingerprint enhancement based on Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) Analysis. STFT is a well known technique to analyze non-stationary signals. We extend its application to 2D images. The algorithm simultaneously estimates all the intrinsic properties of the fingerprints such as the foreground region mask, local ridge orientation and local frequency orientation. Furthermore we propose a probabilistic approach of robustly estimating these parameters. We compare the proposed approach to other filtering approaches and show that our technique performs favorably. We also objectively measure the improvement in recognition rate due to our enhancement. We obtain a 17% improvement in the recognition rate on a set of 800 images from the FVC2002 database. Sharat S. The efficiency of automated fingerprint identification system depends highly on fingerprint image enhancement algorithms. Fingerprint image enhancement can be divided into two stages: 1) At the first stage we enhance the image with conventional filters, where filter parameters do not change. 2) At the second stage we enhance the structure of ridges and valleys with contextual filters, where fil...

متن کاملFingerprint Image Enhancement Using STFT Analysis
The performance of a fingerprint feature extraction and matching algorithm depend heavily upon the quality of the input fingerprint image. While the ‘quality’ of a fingerprint image cannot be objectively measured, it roughly corresponds to the the clarity of the ridge structure in the fingerprint image. A ‘good’ quality fingerprint image has high contrast and well defined ridges and valleys. A ...
متن کاملA Method for Fingerprint Matching Using Invariant Moment
A method for fingerprint matching using invariant moment featuresis proposed. The fingerprint image is first preprocessed to enhance the original image by the Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) analysis. Then, a set of seven invariant moment features is extracted to represent the fingerprint image from a cirque of Interest (COI) based on the reference point of the enhanced fingerprint image. T...
